This year, Vienna turns an incredible 40 years old. Further success followed until the band split up in 1988, after a golden run of records and tours. Vienna was so successful that, finally, Ultravox had their place at the top table. It’s parent album re-entered the charts following the single’s success and also made it to No 2. Vienna went on to become the 8 th best selling single of the year and to win a Brit award for Single of the Year.įamously, despite all this ubiquity, Vienna never hit the number one spot, but was kept at number two for four weeks, three of those playing second fiddle to Joe Dolce’s risible Shaddap You Face. The image of Midge Ure’s foggy breath and pointy sideburns became a kind of visual shorthand for 1981’s cold winter. It was everywhere, on TV, radio and a thousand video jukeboxes. Vienna was a huge hit and became one of those rare breeds of songs that seem to soundtrack a certain era. In January 1981, Ultravox released the album’s title track as a single. The album Vienna was released and made it to number 14 in the album charts before beating a hasty retreat.īut a change in fortune was just around the corner. This may have seemed to be short-lived however, as 2 nd single Passing Strangers stalled at 57 in the charts. Their first single together, 1980’s Sleepwalk, made the top 30, which must surely been the cause of much relief and celebration for the band. Ure’s appointment to the Ultravox ranks marked another change of direction, along with an accompanying change of audience. Prior to being recruited for Ultravox, he was playing guitar for rockers Thin Lizzy, making his career trajectory one of the strangest of the 70s. He first found fame with Slik, a copyist Bay City Rollers, who had some success in the mid 70s, before teaming up with Egan and Glen Matlock’s to form Rich Kids. Ure had quite the varied history at this point. On the recommendation of Rusty Egan, Ultravox Keyboard player Billy Currie asked Midge Ure to join a revitalized version of the band. Ultravox were to be unfairly consigned to history, a victim of the major label demands for shifting units.īut behind the scenes, things were still happening. As a result of this, Ultravox split up following a self financed American tour, their commercial promise unfulfilled.Īnd that, it seemed, was that. The album was a huge step forward for Ultravox and is almost perfect from start to finish.Ĭommercial success however still somehow eluded them, and in a burst of overreaction, their record company dropped them and deleted their three albums from their catalogue. It is easy to see that Systems of Romance laid the foundations for much of what was to come, with both synth pop and the New Romantic movement owing it a great deal. Their sound had moved on from their early foundations and had keyboards moved very much to the foreground. Listening back to the album now, it does sound like its punk clothes were perhaps added in haste and didn’t actually fit that well.įor their 3 rd album, the superb Systems of Romance, Ultravox decamped to Berlin with producer Conny Plank. Tracks such as My Sex and I Want to be a Machine set out their stall as purveyors of cool, futuristic music that was difficult to pigeonhole.Ģ nd Album Ha!-Ha!-Ha!, also released in 1977, wore its punk influences more openly and again received praise from the music critics of the time. Ultravox! (then with added exclamation mark) mixed Berlin-era Bowie cool with some new wave sensibilities. Their debut self-titled album was released in 1977 and sounds to these ears like it was written before the onrush of punk, but recorded after it.

There’s a happy ending, by any standard, but at the same time its consequences bring on all the physical pain and emotional ambivalence he’d been miraculously spared while ostensibly at death’s door. (While we get frequent glimpses of his commanding stage presence, the film assumes we know where he rests in the guitar pantheon, and why.)ĭigressive without being trivial, whimsical without getting too silly, “The Ecstasy of Wilko Johnson” floats on its subject’s giddy death-sentence high until drama intrudes in the form of an unanticipated medical development. Nor does he have much to say about his musical expertise, despite others’ occasional worshipful testimony on that score. The documentary’s freeform but never meandering progress follows the course of his thoughts, which touch upon such matters as Viking lore and astronomy, but apart from a prolonged meditation on his lifetime home of Canvey Island in Essex, they seldom turn overtly autobiographical. The latter are heavy on surreal visions suggestive of an afterlife, despite Johnson’s admitted atheism they include clips from works by screen surrealists Jean Cocteau, Luis Bunuel and Sergei Parajanov, as well as spiritually questing classics like Andrei Tarkovsky’s “The Mirror” and Ingmar Bergman’s “The Seventh Seal.” Also in the mix are filmed incarnations of Milton and Shakespeare, because, thick working-class accident notwithstanding, Johnson is indeed a “literary type” who would’ve alternately enjoyed a career in literary academia. Your death is settled.” He finds the world “almost tingling with life,” a perception that Temple illustrates via various striking images, some new (including views of the chrome-domed subject bathed in psychedelic lights), others borrowed. Then he has ample time to simply enjoy the heightened, near-euphoric sense of awareness he’s experienced since his diagnosis, saying, “The idea that death is really imminent makes you realize what a wonderful thing it is to be alive … In a way, you’re free of the grip of mortality. (The latter, rather shockingly, proves the most commercially successful recording for either collaborator in more than 30 years.) Having recently buried his wife of some 40 years, and as yet feeling fine (he decides to forgo chemo, which would likely add little time and much pain), he first sets about checking off a couple of bucket-list items: a last trip to his beloved Japan, where he plays some gigs, and finally the recording of a long-discussed album with his old friend Roger Daltry. Instead, the focus is primarily on Johnson’s present tense in his mid-60s, when he discovers out of the blue that he has inoperable pancreatic cancer - and a life expectancy of about 10 months. Feelgood after just six years in 1977, later fronting his own band, playing with Ian Dury and others - though little of that later history is recounted here. Indeed, he left the British R&B “pub rock” movement leader Dr. That would likely preclude the U.S., where the band Johnson is primarily known for never got a commercial foothold. The engaging result should do well as a broadcast item, particularly wherever its protagonist has a substantial fan base. A terminal cancer diagnosis proves more liberating than traumatic for the historied rock-guitarist subject of “The Ecstasy of Wilko Johnson.” Julien Temple’s characteristically playful, pop-culture-savvy approach to the documentary form might seem ill suited to the subject of mortality, but veteran English axman Johnson’s unexpectedly buoyant response to very bad news makes for a film about saying goodbye that is itself void of grief, fear or regret. The minifigs in these sets were quite unique such as Lotso the bear came in the form of a bigfig and the Chunk minifig looked like some sort of unusual robot toy. In 2010 LEGO released a wave of Toy Story sets for the third movie. Just before I do, here is a brief history of Toy Story and LEGO. With Toy Story 4 being released and LEGO having created some awesome sets to go along with the movie I wanted to take a little look at the awesome new minifigures. I have not seen the movie yet and I am avoiding spoilers so all I know is what I have taken from the new LEGO Toy Story 4 sets. Toy Story 4 continues on from the events of the third movie. Woody meets a little girl called Bonnie who ends up becoming the toys’ new owner when Andy leaves for college. The toys need to get back to Andy who has grown up quite a bit in this movie as he is about to start college. In Toy Story 3 the plot focuses on the Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the other toys accidentally being donated to a day care centre. Along with meeting some new characters in this adventure we are also introduced to Jessie and Bullseye the horse who become Andy’s new toys. Woody knows that a toy’s purpose is to be played with. In the sequel, Buzz leads his friends to rescue Woody from a toy collector who wants to keep him in a museum. For Andy’s Birthday he receives a new toy from his parents which makes the cowboy toy Woody feel left out and jealous with the arrival of Buzz Lightyear. The first movie introduced us to a young child, Andy, and his bunch of toys. Toy Story centres around the lives of… well… toys. After other mod makers that were not part of the Long War project discovered how to make changes to the game by directly working with its Unreal Engine, more significant game alterations became possible, and the forums of NexusMods became a hub where such changes were exchanged. (at 3:20)Īccording to Amineri, one of the mod's core developers, initial versions of Long War used changes to the game's configuration file to change content in the game. However, the mod does have an option that significantly shortens the campaign. As the mod's name implies, a campaign in Long War takes significantly longer than a campaign in the unmodified game, with Eurogamer 's Chris Bratt estimating it at around 150 hours. The mod makes changes to many of the game's existing features, adds new concepts, and brings back concepts from the first game in the franchise, Julian Gollop's UFO: Enemy Unknown. The aim of the Long War mod is, in the words of its developers, to create "much deeper strategic and tactical play and a greater variety of problems to throw at the player". Christopher Livingston, covering the mod for PC Gamer įirst and foremost, the mod invites you to struggle through a longer, harsher campaign, but provides you with some new options to endure the prolonged alien assault. Long War has been downloaded from NexusMods over 1,090,000 times by over 395,000 separate users. The team released separate versions for Enemy Unknown and Enemy Within until the end of 2013, and thereafter only released versions for Enemy Within. Three members of Firaxis Games also provided assistance. They were joined by four senior contributors, 20 voice actors, and 29 contributors assisting with programming, art, sound engineering, translations, research, and porting the mod to Mac and Linux. Lumpkin), Amineri (Rachel Norman), XMarksTheSpot, and Ellatan (Alex Rozenfeld). At the time that it exited beta, the mod's development was led by four core members, JohnnyLump (John J. The developers announced in July 2015 with beta 15f2 that they had finished adding new features, and that any future releases would only correct bugs or balance issues. It was first uploaded to NexusMods on 4 January 2013, and exited beta with the release of version 1.0 on 28 December 2015. Long War is a partial conversion mod for XCOM: Enemy Unknown and XCOM: Enemy Within. Enemy Within added two additional ways for players to upgrade their soldiers - through genetic modification and through cybernetic combat suits called MECs - as well as new alien units and a new enemy faction, a secret paramilitary organization called EXALT. XCOM: Enemy Within is an expansion of Enemy Unknown, and was released in November 2013. The player directs the organization's research and development, manages its finances, and controls its soldiers in combat. In XCOM: Enemy Unknown, the player assumes the role of the commander of a secret multinational military organization, XCOM, as it fights off an invasion by a numerically and technologically superior invading alien force. XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a turn-based tactics video game developed by Firaxis Games and released in October 2012. On 19 January 2017, the core team that released Long War, now going by the name Pavonis Interactive, released Long War 2 for XCOM 2, and has created their own independent game, Terra Invicta. Firaxis pointed to the popularity of Long War as a reason they added built-in support for modding into the sequel XCOM 2, and used Long War Studios to provide initial add-ons for the game at release. It has been downloaded over 1,000,000 times, by almost 400,000 different users. Long War has received praise from both video game journalists and from the developers at Firaxis. By the end of the mod's development, the team was working directly with the Unreal Development Kit and had created a Java-based tool to help manage the changes that the mod was making. According to one of the mod's core developers, Amineri, the mod started as a series of changes to the base game's configuration file, and grew more expansive as the team's capabilities grew. The mod was developed by Long War Studios, a team that came to include four core members, with assistance from 29 contributors, 20 voice actors, and three members of Firaxis Games, the developer of Enemy Unknown and Enemy Within. Long War adds a significant number of new soldier classes, abilities, weapons, armors, and usable items, and also introduces new features, including soldier fatigue and improvements to alien units over the course of the game. Almost every aspect of the original game is altered, creating a longer, more complex campaign that presents players with more strategic choices and customization options. It was first released in early 2013, and it exited beta at the end of 2015. Long War is a fan-made partial conversion mod for the turn-based tactics video game XCOM: Enemy Unknown and its expansion, XCOM: Enemy Within. Features of Artensoft Photo Mosaic Wizard. The biggest issue, naturally, is the dart sensor lock. Otherwise for the most part the Stryfe is good, good handle, good triggers, good clip (mag) release. I personally find the Stryfe a little awkward to hold underbarrel as that section is quite thin and the left side is totally flat. Usability: Both blasters have their share of issues, though in my opinion one is far worse than the other. There's some variation at range, but for the most part the lack of power keeps the darts roughly on the right track. There's nothing really between them, so naturally this round is a draw.Īccuracy: Again as the blasters are so similar, accuracy is much the same. Range/Power: Both grey trigger blasters have almost identical internals and so achieve similar ranges, somewhere in the 8-10m range depending on battery quality. The Rapid Red comes with itself, a 12 dart clip (mag), 12 varied Rebelle darts and a Rebelle Message Decoder. I personally prefer the Rapid Red as I really dislike the assymetry of the Stryfe and quite like the sleekness of the Rapid Red, but both are pretty good in their own ways.Īccessories: The Stryfe comes with itself, a 6 dart clip (mag) and 6 Elites. It's more symmetric than the Stryfe, with the exception of the bulges for the flywheel motors. The Rapid Red has a much smoother, sleeker design found on most Rebelle blasters, with the same sort of feminine colour scheme of purples/light blue/pinks. The biggest problem I have with it is the assymetry of the shells, being that the left side is flat while the right side is raised. Is there actually that much difference?Īesthetics: The Stryfe has the same sharp modern design found in most Elite blasters, with a pretty good colour scheme of blue/orange/white/grey and design. Both are compact semi-auto flywheelers with a similar layout, and for the most part the Rapid Red is seen by many to be just a Rebelle-d Stryfe. The Stryfe and Rapid Red are very similar blasters. They’d probably be thrilled to celebrate Singles Awareness Day this year because some alone time is hard to come by when you’re cramped in magic bottle together. Thankfully, though, now Jafar and Iago get to live out an eternity together as roommates in a magic bottle in the Cave of Wonders! I’m sure they’re stoked. If he stopped caring what other people thought, then he may have avoided spending an existence in eternal servitude as a genie. Maybe Jafar is just tired of being overlooked and underappreciated at work though. Those two are like two evil peas in a pod! Okay, we know that he’s awful and willing to do anything to get ultimate power - even murdering the Sultan or bewitching Jasmine to fall in love with him - but when it comes down to it, we feel bad for the guy! He’s so consumed with being respected and having power that he doesn’t even realize how good he’s got it! He has a great job, a cool magic hobby, and he’s even got a great best friend in Iago. Jafar in Aladdinis delightfully evil, down to his twirly beard and all. 4) Things Aren’t Always What They Seem: Jafar The seaweed isn’t always greener on the other side. She could have had a delicious vegetable garden (one that wasn’t filled with poor unfortunate souls) and then thrown her own party with tasty snacks or something! Triton’s party would have had nothing on Ursula’s. Plus, she could have appreciated her two eels Flotsam and Jetsam a little more or tried putting those uh. However, instead of focusing her energy on other people, she should have set her sights on herself. Ursula fondly recalls celebrations and feasts that she’d been invited to before King Triton banished her. She only sets her evil plan in motion after she sees Ariel heading to the palace for a party that she herself was not invited to. We know she’s a bit of a grouch and she may not always have people’s best interests at heart, but she’s really just tired of being snubbed by everyone in the kingdom. Home alone 3 (1997) (movie): 50+ Alice Ribbons Home Alone 3. Home alone 3 is a 1997 american family comedy film written and produced by john hughes. Long term than anger the villain, but the damage would've been far more severe in real life. The Little Mermaid’s villain, Ursula, is by far the coolest Sea Witch under the sea. Group and also the first female villain in the home alone franchise. You don’t need a girl to be happy, Gaston! 3) She Took Matters Into Her Own Tentacles: Ursula Also, if he took a good look around maybe he’d realize that he has the ultimate best friend and partner, LeFou, anyway! Who needs love when you have a best friend who sings your praises (literally)? If he hadn’t been so consumed by Belle, maybe he’d have been enjoying brunch with friends (eating five dozen eggs) or grabbing a drink with LeFou at the tavern instead of falling off the castle roof. We may not like Gaston, but he could have turned out to be a better guy if he’d just stopped trying to get the girl! Gaston should have spent more time focusing on himself and stopped trying to find all his happiness in someone else. A surprise wedding maybe wasn’t the best way to win Belle’s heart. He was so in love with love - aka obsessed with Belle - that he never considered if they were well-suited for each other or if he might be coming on just a little too strong. Beauty in the Beast’s Gaston is the real beast in the Disney love story. Crazy Games 2 has the best free online games selection and offers the. DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1. In 100 Rogues that very fate was realised. It's not often I can claim that my second playthrough of a game resulted in me dying in the pits of hell, mercilessly butchered by a clown and a pack of gummi-rats shortly after defeating the pope. More Rogue-lite than Roguelike, with its SNES-era production values and console gameplay, not-to-be-taken-seriously bestiary, boss battles and tongue-in-cheek humour, I'd probably go as far as to say its my favourite classic-style rogue game released to date. Towerfall may well be the top multiplayer game on the Ouya, but Wesley Paugh's 100 Rogues is hands-down the best single-player game available for the console - at least in this humble reviewer's opinion.
